Toshiba is sampling a 4-channel power amplifier for automotive audio applications that claims to be highly resistant to the power surges typically found within vehicle electronics.

The chip delivers 50W of output power per channel into a 4Ω load.

The device includes built-in mute and standby functions as well as protection functions such as offset detection and short circuit detection as well as overvoltage and over temperature.

The chip includes a built-in filter to improve resistance to extraneous high-frequency noise that may be present in the vehicle.

This filter also prevents the generation of abnormal noises from the amplifier due to high-frequency noise from onboard electronics, such as motors, or other devices such as smartphones, says the company.

It also supports 6V operations, making it suitable for vehicles equipped with idling reduction systems, which have become popular in recent years.

This feature suppresses the ‘popping’ sounds that can occur when the supply voltage fluctuates.

The clip detection signal can be used to control the volume and tone control circuits, thereby improving the sound quality of the audio system.

Sample shipments start today with mass production scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2019.
